Once your flight lands at Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO), you’ll first proceed through immigration (passport control). After that, follow the signs for Ritiro bagagli (Baggage Claim) to collect your luggage.
These signs are easy to identify — blue backgrounds with white symbols guide you clearly through the terminal.
Once you’ve retrieved your bags, follow the signs marked Uscita (Exit) or Train / Bus / Taxi to reach the main transport area. Most coach services and long-distance transfers operate from Terminal 3, which handles the majority of international arrivals.
As you exit from Terminal 3, you’ll pass Meeting Points 2, 3, and 4 along the arrivals corridor. If you’ve booked a private transfer in advance, look out for a driver holding a sign with your name — they’ll escort you directly to the vehicle.
If you plan to use public transport, turn immediately right after exiting and follow the signs towards the bus terminals or the Fiumicino Aeroporto railway station. All routes are well signposted and linked by covered walkways.
There are several convenient ways to travel from Fiumicino Airport to the centre of Rome — including trains, coaches, taxis, and private transfers. Below, we’ll guide you through each option to help you decide which one best suits your journey.
Price: €8 or €16 (approx. £7–£14)
There are two train options available for travelling from Fiumicino Airport to the centre of Rome. The quickest and most convenient is the Leonardo Express, while the more economical choice is the local FL1 regional train. The railway station is located just outside Terminal 3.
Price: €14 (approx. £12)
The Leonardo Express is a direct, non-stop train between Fiumicino Airport and Roma Termini, Rome’s main train station. Trains run every 30 minutes throughout the day. Tickets can be purchased at ticket machines, the official Trenitalia ticket desk, or from authorised third-party vendors within the airport.
This is the fastest public transport option between the airport and the city centre.
Please note that Rome’s public transport passes are not valid on the Leonardo Express.
Before boarding, make sure to validate your ticket using one of the green or yellow stamping machines near the platform entrance. Once validated, your ticket is valid for 90 minutes.
Another way to reach the city centre is by using the city’s metropolitan train network, which is connected to the Rome Metro. The FL1 metropolitan train links Rome Fiumicino Airport with Roma Tiburtina, Fara Sabina, Poggio Mirteto, and Orte.
The train departs from the platform on the left. However, it does not stop at Termini station. To reach the city centre, you’ll need to disembark at either Tiburtina or Ostiense station and connect to the Rome Metro.

You can purchase a ticket online in advance, allowing you to avoid queuing before departure. Online tickets are also typically €1–€2 cheaper. Of course, you can still buy a ticket for the next departing bus directly at the stop. However, it’s wise to book your return bus ticket in advance to ensure you’re not late for your flight. On average, buses take around 45 minutes to reach Rome Termini station from the airport under normal traffic conditions.
The most affordable public transport option between the airport and Rome’s city centre (Termini station) is the Terravision Bus. The service operates between 05:35 and 23:00.
This company operates services between 05:00 and 20:30 from Rome, and from 08:30 to 12:30 from Fiumicino (FCO). Stops in central Rome include Piazza Indipendenza (near Termini station) and Via Crescenzio (near Castel Sant’Angelo). The journey between FCO and Termini takes approximately 50 minutes. If you opt for this service, it’s advisable to arrive at the stop at least 20 minutes before the scheduled departure time, as buses may arrive and leave earlier than expected. Also bear in mind the considerable walking distance from Terminals 1 and 2, where most domestic and inter-Schengen flights arrive and depart.
This is a useful option if you need to travel to or from Fiumicino Airport late at night or very early in the morning, as trains and other bus services do not run throughout the night. During the night-time hours, the journey takes approximately 30–40 minutes. If you’re travelling from Rome’s city centre to Fiumicino, the Cotral bus departs from the main bus station at Termini (Piazza dei Cinquecento), located in front of the train station, opposite the Museo Nazionale Romano.
Rome’s public transport stops operating relatively early – services end at 23:30 on weekdays, and continue until 01:30 on Friday and Saturday nights. Night buses do operate, but they run infrequently.
This shuttle service operates between Fiumicino Airport (Terminal 3) and Termini station daily from 08:00 until 23:30. It also stops in the centre of Fiumicino town, and at Piazzale 12 Ottobre, near Ostiense train station, where you can connect to certain Italo high-speed trains.
You can book a private transfer through website for €70.
The driver will meet you at the airport, and you’ll be able to reach any destination in the city quickly and comfortably. Transfers can be arranged in advance via rome4.us.
Price: A fixed fare of €55 applies between the city centre and Fiumicino Airport, in both directions.
The fixed fare from Fiumicino Airport is valid only for destinations within the Aurelian Walls (Rome’s historical centre).
You will find white taxis waiting outside the passenger terminals. Be cautious, as some taxi drivers may try to take advantage of tourists.
It’s important to pay attention to the details: official fixed rates are posted at the airport taxi rank. To gain more passengers, some drivers may drive aggressively—don’t hesitate to ask them to slow down.
The fixed fare includes luggage and is valid for up to four passengers. It applies both from Fiumicino Airport to the City of Rome and vice versa.
Please ensure your destination is within the City of Rome. If you are travelling outside the Aurelian Walls, the fare is metered and could rise to as much as €100.
Price: €80 to €130
Please note that Uber fares can vary significantly (for example, from €90 to €108). It’s advisable to check the app for a fare estimate, as prices increase during peak times or high demand.
